Advice from the Future You!

In one of the books we read this year, a message is passed on to a younger version of a person from their future self. I won't name the book as that is a pretty big spoiler, but the concept caused me to think about what kind of advice, encouragement, message, or simply heads up the kids may have felt worth passing on to themselves at the beginning of the year. Here are some of their responses.

Angel - "Make sure to be careful with whats about to happen. I also would prepare for meeting new people."

Connor - "I would tell myself that I need to practice my comprehension and also that I will need to start practicing my lines because a play is coming."

Daphne - "Try to work hard. Do the best you can. Be nice to people around you. Never give up. At least try."

Devraj - "You are really going to like the gold rush epilogue."

Isabella - "Before you start school make sure you have a math book to study first because your grade gets harder and more challenging. Be excited and if your new try to make friends because star Academy is so fun."

Jeremy - "I would give myself advice for math. Like multiplication. Or other types of math."

Jonathan - "I wouldn't have known the angles measurements."

Kiana - "Hey I bet you can't wait for 4th grade. You'll love your over night field trip. Best birthday ever! The play will be so much fun. Hope you have the best time in 4th grade. I know I did."

Madelyn - "I would tell myself to try my best and if I keep trying I accomplish my goals. I will try hard and and get good grades. I will keep trying and trying until I get it right."

Mateo - "I would try to be as nice as possible so I could have lots of friends. I would also try and interact to get friends."

Michaela - "Don't be evil. Be a good person! Don't try to make friends; just let them friend you!"

Mihir - "That, always be confident about the subjects the new teacher will introduce to you."

Olivia - "I would tell myself not to get into many arguments and to be nice and ask the the teacher to help me if I need it. Also make make new friends. Learn more stuff. Talk to people I don't know."

Sierra - "I would tell myself to be outgoing! Find new friends. I didn't know that people were fond of me before. Oh, and remind Mr. Fassler he needs to be more strict. :D See ya!"

William - "Long Division is not hard."

Zerlan - "I would tell myself to go do good. Be smart and do great so that I could have a great future. I could tell me that in the future you have to work hard."

California Missions and More (student submissions)

Musical Image result for rows of crops
Hi, I am the yankee framer. Not the baseball player. I am one of the yankees that come to California as a place of “Golden Opportunity.”  I like to farm a lot.  I meet President Polk. He wants to own California. He thinks that it will be a good place to Manifest Destiny. Image result for plain landform

HI my name is Akshaj. I am playing the yankee framer in our play. I am supposed to act like I don’t want to be a farmer. No offense but (I think the yankees have the best song!) I think the play will be enjoyable. I show up twice in the play. This play is very interesting. I thought that i will feel uncomfortable when I sing but it’s fun. Handing off to Daphne……………..

Our Class Musical
By:Daphne
Hi my name is Daphne. I wanted to tell you that in  our class we have been practicing our play called California Missions and More! My part in the play is the farmer’s wife. It is very fun. This week we were supposed to memorize our lines. Mr. Fassler told us that it is called “off script.” Off script means to memorize the script. In case you don’t know our play, is about some people making a movie. Briyonni and Keira are the directors. But they are not the real directors they are acting like directors. Also Mr. Fassler told us at his old school one class also did California Missions and More!

 Our Class Play
                 by:Sierra
Hello! My name is Sierra. I am in the play California Missions and More with my classmates! My part is Johnson, the assistant director. June 2nd is when we perform the play for our school and June 4th is when we perform it for our parents. Right now almost all of us have memorized our lines. I am the only one who gets to use the script because I will actually have it on the stage when we perform it in case someone accidentally forgets their lines. I think everyone is happy with our play so far and I like it too. We have almost finished the choreography as well. Now all we really need to do is make the props and make the play awesome and epic! I think the parents and kids will appreciate it!

Math Menu!!!!

Math Menu by Jakob Brooks

This year we are doing a menu math project for open house. It is basically just making a fake restaurant and a fake menu for it, but the catch is that you have to do math things in it. For example, you would have one-half of your desserts with chocolate and two-fifths of your appetizers with meat. The first step was to make a layout of all your food items on a rough draft scratch paper. Step 2 was to was to have all of those items with ingredients and prices. Step 3 was to have a piece of construction paper with the name of your restaurant and a layout of where the food will go. Step 4 was to have the food written out in the construction paper with prices and ingredients. Step 5 was to have a written history about your restaurant that had to be at least a paragraph. The fifth and final step was to have it colored in and finished.

I think the most difficult part was adding all of the math components such as requiring number patterns and an equation with adding fractions. Some people chose to do everything online, but I chose to have everything hand-written. I thought it was easier to add the pictures and diagrams by hand instead of having to find the right picture, make it the right size, and have to print it out later.

Fun with Electricity

A little static electricity goes a long way.

Making simple, series, and parallel circuits with batteries, wires, and bulbs.

Can't keep a good balloon down.

After learning about magnets, we turned our attention to electricity. We started with whole group discussions about static electricity and the build up of electrons and eventual discharge often felt as a shock. This week we broke into our expert groups as students learned about and then shared with their teammates information regarding electric current, electric circuits, and next up are electromagnets. Students had a blast with energy sticks that allow students to see the need for a complete path for current to power a device and to easily test materials as conductors or insulators.
